Got your PSAT score? Here’s what it means and how to prepare

How the numbers work

• Selection Index = (2 × Reading and Writing + Math) ÷ 10. Section scores run 160–760, so the index runs 48–228. Example: 720 Reading and Writing and 700 Math gives (1440 + 700) ÷ 10 = 214.
• Only the October PSAT/NMSQT taken in grade 11 counts for National Merit. The PSAT 10, PSAT 8/9, and a grade 10 PSAT/NMSQT do not.
• PSAT and SAT scores sit on one vertical scale, so a PSAT score is a rough read on where you’d land on the SAT today.

National Merit has entry requirements, including rules on where you attend high school and, in some cases, U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence. International students and visa holders should confirm eligibility first. NMSC’s official requirements are the final word: NMSC entry requirements

Last year’s lines, for reference only — this year’s cutoffs are not published yet. D.C. and U.S. students abroad use the highest state line; U.S. territories use the Commended line. Last year’s nationwide Commended Student line was 208.

这些数字怎么来的

• 选择指数 = (2 × 阅读与写作 + 数学) ÷ 10。两科都是 160–760，所以选择指数范围是 48–228。例：阅读与写作 720、数学 700 → (1440 + 700) ÷ 10 = 214。
• 只有 11 年级考的 10 月 PSAT/NMSQT 进入 National Merit 评选；PSAT 10、PSAT 8/9 和 10 年级考的 PSAT/NMSQT 都不算。
• PSAT 和 SAT 在同一把纵向量尺上，所以 PSAT 分数可以粗略看出你现在考 SAT 大概在哪。
